Consulting Services Offered

Otwell Mawby has extensive experience working in the oil and natural gas industry in northern Michigan and has been providing consulting services for a variety of clients in this field since 1988. Services offered include:

Spill Cleanup and Response: 

Otwell Mawby routinely provides oilfield spill response oversight activities, which entails directing clean-up activities at release sites with onsite contractors, interfacing and coordinating with the appropriate regulatory entities (EGLE, EPA, etc), conducting field screening for hydrocarbons and chloride in impacted soils and groundwater, and completing confirmation soil and/or groundwater sampling to support spill characterization and/or site closure. 

Groundwater Monitoring

Otwell Mawby completes groundwater monitoring for a variety of oil and natural gas sites, which includes quarterly and semi-annual groundwater monitoring to support groundwater characterization and monitored natural attenuation following releases, and to support performance monitoring of remedial measures. Otwell Mawby also completes semi-annual Rule 1002 sampling related to tank batteries and associated containments. Sampling techniques utilized for routine monitoring sites include bailer sampling, peristaltic pump sampling, submersible pump sampling and bladder pump sampling, many of which are completed utilizing low flow sampling methodology. 

Site Characterization/Hydrogeological Assessments

Oftentimes spills impact soil and groundwater beyond the limits of what can be feasibly cleaned up during the initial response. When this occurs, Otwell Mawby is well versed in completing site characterizations and hydrogeological assessments. These assessments are often conducted utilizing a drill rig, and assess contaminant trends in soil and groundwater. Completion of such characterization allows for fulfilling the necessary regulatory requirements, and supports completion of scoping appropriate remedial actions to ultimately achieve site closure. 

Spill Remediation

Otwell Mawby has many years of experience designing and implementing air sparge systems, soil vapor extraction (SVE) systems, utilizing injections of oxidizing/reducing compounds, and implementing purge and disposal/pump and treat systems, to remediate sites that have been impacted from releases of petroleum and/or chlorides, among other compounds. Remediation systems such as the aforementioned are often designed by Otwell Mawby as a means to economically remediate a site, considering factors such as monitoring costs, implementation costs, and operational/maintenance costs. 

Compliance Reporting

Otwell Mawby is well versed in completing compliance reporting in the Oil & Gas industry, which routinely includes applications for Permits to Install (PTI), Air Emissions Reporting, EPA Greenhouse Gas reporting, and completion of SPCC/PIP Plans.

Environmental Due Diligence

Otwell Mawby has experience in completing Due Diligence (including Phase I and Phase II) investigations for oil and natural gas production fields prior to acquisition, or as part of divestitures. 

TENORM Management

Otwell Mawby has experience working on many sites that include management of technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM) associated with oil and natural gas infrastructure such as well casings, flow lines, etc.  We can provide for assessment, monitoring, and remediation/mitigation at these sites to ensure protection to worker health and the environment while complying with regulations.
